our history
PWRFC was founded in 2002 as a Division II women's rugby team. Getting off to a rocky start, the team was unable to win a single conference game until 2009 after which the success of the team took off. In 2009 and in 2010 the PWRFC qualified for the Allegheny Rugby Union (ARU) Championship. Continuing its growth, the team made it all the way to the National Elite Eight in the 2011-2012 season. Showing up at nationals, PWRFC was the dark horse, the team that had come out of the woodwork and that left the other teams whispering and wondering where PWRFC had been for so long.
For the 2012-2013 season, the coaches made the decision to bump the team up to Division I, joining the Mason-Dixon Women's Collegiate Conference where they would compete against teams such as the University of Virginia, West Chester University, Virginia Tech, and James Madison University. The PWRFC was able to prove itself against its competitors in this new conference, putting to rest any doubt that they belonged.
In addition to league matches, the PWRFC competes in several tournaments during the spring season, and the team was Cherry Blossom Tournament champions for the three years running, most recently taking first place in the WVU tournament April 2015 as well as at the Four Leaf 15s tournament in March 2016 and Ruggerfest, hosted by the DC Furies, in April 2016. Two years later in 2018, PWRFC made club history after having qualified for the D1 National Championship Round of 16.
Starting in the 2019-2020 season, the PWRFC made the switch from the Mason-Dixon Women's Collegiate Conference to the Allegheny Rugby Union (ARU) where they continued to compete at the D1 level. The PWRFC had a strong, first season in the ARU ending the regular season with a record of 5-1, qualifying for playoffs and eventually traveling to Poughkeepsie, NY for the Elite 8s that season. In 2022, PWRFC is rebuilding from COVID and ready to take on another exciting year!
